- Is an affiliate of the National Retired Teachers Association which is The Education Community of AARP.
- Has 1400 members. More than 900 are Lifetime members.
- Has 23 Units across the state. Eighteen of the Units have their own officers and most hold monthly meetings from September through May.
- Has been serving school retirees since 1966.
- Invites all school retirees to join the association. Dues for state membership are $15. Unit dues vary but most are in the $5 range.

Why do people join SDRTA? |
- Some join for the social aspect. It's a time to spend with friends and colleagues.
- Some join for the education aspect. The state association and the local units provide programs of importance for retirees.
- Some join because of the community service aspect. They want to give back to the community and they enjoy volunteer work.
- Many join for the advocacy aspect. With the support of AARP, SDRTA works hard to:
- Protect retirement benefits for all school retirees
- Defend school retirees rights and
- Maintain a quality education for all South Dakotans
